Briar Monro

Briar Monro creates beautiful, hand-crafted pottery inspired by the beauty of Whangārei Heads, mid-century aesthetics, and Japanese wood-firing traditions.
Her wheel-thrown, functional forms are created in short runs using 100% NZ clay and fired using sustainable techniques. Her glazes are developed using raw materials, tested and retested. She is currently exploring the histories and geology of Whangārei Heads to see if it is appropriate and viable to create using local clay and rock.
“I see making pottery as an act of stillness, a meditation, a way to explore and interpret, and a way of listening. My hope is that these pieces add to your stillness – your rituals. I’m interested in how inseparable we are from our world, that the very ground we stand on and that I create with, has the same building blocks as our bodies, that we share the same ancestry. Through my practice, exploring how to bring these materials and this environment to the fore, I grow my own understanding of our world and how to live with and within it.”
