Vivien King

Guest Artist on 2025 Arts Trail

Growing up on a farm in the Whangarei District was the inspiration born from a love of the trees, animals and the vibrant energy found in the natural environment

Vivien’s first pieces were patchwork quilts sewn with love and under the guidance of her mother. Much was learnt – colour, design combinations and piecing techniques – these set an important foundation for what was to follow.

Working in a shoe factory in Whangarei was a turning point for Vivien. The process of hides becoming pairs of boots was fascinating and key in her passion to start developing leather creations, on practical everyday bags, journal covers, tobacco holders just to mention a few.

Each leather item is inspired by Vivien’s love of nature’s colour, textures, tones and shapes.

Her use of the natural raw edge and textures of the hides add to the overall feel of the bags.

Woven leather, beads, stamping and leather buttons create abstract designs, leaves, flowers that resonate the very core and energy flow in the natural environment they are born from.
